As the new year arrives, we often reflect on our past year and think about upcoming personal goals and passions. But, reality typically sets in, and our interests fall to the side. The needs of our children, partner, work, and others, always have a way of appearing and sabotaging our personal interests. It is at this time in our life, we forget about our personal sense of self.
What are the potential long-term mental health effects of not creating a space for our personal goals and passions? It can range from our internal feelings of failure and let-down to losing a piece of ourself. The cycle of personal let-down continues with each passing year. We rationalize these feelings by telling ourself that others are more important than our personal well-being.
This year, I encourage you to show yourself that you can hold a space for your personal goals and passions. Reach inside of you and connect to a hobby, activity, or passion you once had. Reignite that flame and give it a place that existed inside of you. As this space is opened, it will fill you with internal joy and show others a side of you that shines.
Remember, we can hold space for more than one role in our life. You won't be neglecting your work responsibilities or abandoning your children's needs in order to reconnect to your personal goals and passions. Allow yourself this gift to avoid the negative feelings and create space for positive ones.
